Wow!!! Dean does it again
by Michael "Yak" Guidry
I wish I could have listened to Carey and "Sweetness" on the radio--I know ya'll had to be excited. What a game!!! I have
learned two things while watching countless Picayune basketball games throughout the years--(1)Wear shorts to the home games
no matter what the temperature is (2)NEVER and I mean NEVER count out Dean Shaw. He is "Da Man".
There have been years where he did not have the most talented team on the court. It did not matter to him--his teams were
ALWAYS in contention for championships. A lot of people, including myself, believe that a team takes on the personality of their
coach. This couldn't be more true of Coach Shaw's teams at Picayune. Though some years they lacked talent, they more than
made up for it with hard work and tenacity. This is a testament to the coaching staff--not only Coach Shaw, but Dennis Peterson
as well as Daniel Kennedy.
Coach Shaw is more than just a great coach--he is a great person. He was one
of the best math teachers that I have ever had.
A lot of people don't know this about coach Shaw--he has touched many lives in the classroom as well as on the basketball court.
I have seen him take kids under his
wing and keep them out of trouble.
It has been speculated that this is his last year (I hope not). If this is so,
what a way to go out in your last game at Kelly Wise.
The Picayune School District is losing
not only a great basketball coach, but also a great teacher and an even better
person.
If this is it, I would like to thank him for the memories. He has touched the
lives of many. I would like to attend games in the future
at Kelly Wise Memorial Gymnasium--Dean
Shaw Court. Just ask him to turn down the heat before he leaves!!!!
Keep on rollin' Tide,
Michael Guidry
