Lady Tide splits games in Poplarville Tourney

by Carey Meitzler

Poplarville--  Picayune opened the season at the Poplarville Tournament losing to Oak Grove 4-3 and defeating Bay High 4-2

in a pair of games that had a close resemblance to each other. All games at the tournament were scheduled for five innings.

Oak Grove 4  Picayune 3

The Lady Tide gave up a first inning unearned run to Oak Grove and the Warriors used walks and timely hitting to score a run

in the second and two more in the third stanza to build a 4-0 lead.

Picayune rallied to score 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Hillary Dickens started the frame with a single to left field and was

replaced by courtesy runner Shalyn Stevens. Taylor Seals followed with a texas leaguer to right field that fell in for a single.

Millie Gill bunted to the third basemen and the throw to first base was mishandled allowing Stevens to score, Seals to advance to

third and Gill to second base on the error.  After a fly out to the catcher, Bethany Crawford reached on an error by the short

stop allowing both Seals and Gill to score making it 4-3.  Brooke Meitzler's sacrifice bunt moved Crawford to third base, but

a strike out on the next batter ended the threat.

Jessie Frierson took the loss on the mound allowing 5 hits and 4 walks.   Brandi Rabion and Dickens had two singles each.

The Lady Tide scored runs in each of their first three at bats before Bay High rallied in the last two innings.

Picayune scored in the bottom of the first when Tiffany Devore was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Devore stole

second and moved to third base on a passed ball.  After two strike outs, Taylor Seals reached on an error by the

third baseman allowing Devore to score.

In the second inning, Millie Gill beat out a grounder to the third baseman for a infield single.  Gill stole second and

moved to third on a sacrifice fly from Brooke Ladner.  After a strike out, Shalyn Stevens doubled inside the line

past the bag at third bringing in Gill for a 2-0 lead.

Picayune scored two runs in the third inning.  Taylor Seals reached on an infield single deep in the hole between

shortstop and third and moved to second base on an errant throw by the shortstop on the late throw to first base.

Seal moved to third base on a fielder's choice off the bat of Bethany Crawford.  Millie Gill fouled out to the catcher

near the first base dugout, but no one covered home plate and Seals sprinted in from third base to score and

Crawford moved up to third. Brooke Ladner's RBI single to center scored Crawford to make it 4-0.

Bay High scored runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to avoid the shutout.

Hillary Dickens got the win for Picayune allowing four hits.  Picayune had the four hits mentioned above.
