Poplarville rallies past Lady Tide 11-4

by Carey Meitzler

Poplarville--Picayune jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Poplarville rallied to take a 11-4 win in non-division action played in

frigid conditions on Tuesday night in Poplarville.

Picayune scored a pair of runs in the top of the first on a miscue by the Lady Hornets.  With two outs, Millie Gill laid down

a bunt that was fielded by the catcher who threw the ball into right field as no one covered first base to accept the throw

allowing Brandi Rabion and Taylor Seals to score making it 2-0.

The Lady Tide added two more runs in the top of the second inning.  With two outs, leadoff hitter Tiffany Devore walked.

Rabion singled to left center and Hillary Dickens hit the first pitch a double to the left center gap that plated Devore and

Rabion for a 4-0 lead.

After holding Picayune scoreless in the top of the third, Poplarville clawed back with a run in the bottom of the third

on a double steal with runners at first and third base to cut the lead to 4-1.  Poplarville held Picayune scoreless in the top

of the fourth.

Kayla Fendlason doubled to open the home half of the fourth.  The next batter, Allysa Graeter hit a grounder to short

and Picayune attempted a throw to third base to retire Fendlason that resulted in an error and Graeter raced to second

base on the play.  The next batter walked loaded the bases.  A fielder's choice allowed Picayune to record a force out

at home for the first out. A line drive to first baseman Hillary Dickens made it two outs, but leadoff hitter Kayla Ross

tripled off the base of the wall clearing the bases and tied the game at 4-4.

Picayune would only have one base runner the rest of the way, a fifth inning walk.  In the bottom of the fifth, Poplarville

sent 10 batters to the plate and pushed across four runs after two were out to lead 8-4.  Poplarville added three runs

in the sixth, two coming on a triple by Graeter.

Picayune (1-2) will play at St Patrick on Thursday.
