Picayune cruises past Stone 51-14

by Carey Meitzler

Perkinston--Picayune could have been emotionally flat after their huge win over Hattiesburg last

week, but the Maroon Tide took care of their business to stay unbeaten in region play crusing

past the Stone Tomcats 51-14 at A.L. May Stadium on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast

Community College.

Picayune and Stone each converted a couple of first downs on their first possessions, but both

neither was able to keep the football.   The Maroon Tide had to punt and Stone would fumble the

ball to stop the possessions.  Stone's fumble on fourth down was recovered by Picayune at their

own 44.

On first down, junior fullback Blake Merrifield busted loose for a 43 yard run and three plays later

junior Skylar Bowman plunged in from 1 yard out on the first play of the second quarter.  Jackson

Samples point after made it 7-0 with 11:58 left.

After the Picayune defense forced a three and out resulting in a punt, the offense got the ball back

at their Maroon Tide 38. On second down, Merrifield got loose again, this time for 38 yards, to put

the ball at the Stone 10.  Picayune had to settled for a 22 yard field goal by Samples for a 10-0

with 7:05 left.

Picayune got the ball back quickly as junior Cole Bean recovered a Tomcat fumble at the Stone

36.  Ten plays later, Bowman had another 1 yard sneak for the touchdown with 1:56 left, but the

point after was wide right and the Maroon Tide lead was 16-0.

Picayune's defense held Stone on the first possession of the second half and a short punt gave

the Maroon Tide the ball at the Tomcat 45.  On first down Bowman connected with senior Vyron

Brown for what appeared to be a touchdown, but a holding penalty on the play at the Stone 12

put the ball at the Tomcat 22 after the play. On the next play, Merrifield got loose again and this

time found the end zone for the touchdown and Samples extra point made it 23-0 with 9:18 left

in the third quarter.

Stone's next possession ended on a failed fake punt run at their own 32 on a good play by Bean

as he tackled Tomcat punter Mason Hunt short of the first down.  On the first play, Bowman found

Brown on a post route for the touchdown and Samples booted the point after pushing the lead to

30-0 with 7:18 left in the third quarter.

Picayune's defense got the ball back holding Stone on downs at the Picayune 33.  Picayune was

unable to move the ball and had to punt.  The snap was low and got by Samples and Stone would

recover the ball in the end zone as Samples attempt to throw the ball out the back of the end zone

for a safety came up short and the Tomcats jumped the ball for the touchdown.

The Maroon Tide got the ball in great field position when Stone's attempted onside kick was

touched too soon by a Tomcat and Picayune started at the Stone 49.  After an unsportsmanlike

conduct penalty against Stone, Picayune had the ball at the 34.  Six plays later, Merrifield score

on a 2 yard run and Samples point after made it 37-7 with 1:41 left in the third.

Stone scored on their next possession on a 5 yard run by Tavarus Breland on the last play of

the third quarter.and Hunt's point after made it 37-14.

Another unsuccessful onside kick, put Picayune at the Stone 49.  Eight plays later, sophomore

David 'the Baker's Dozen' Baker pounded it in from 9 yards out and the Samples point after

put the score at 44-14 with 8:15 left.

Picayune closed out the scoring on sophmore T.J. Polk's first varsity touchdown on a 3 yard run

with 2:51 left and Samples made the point after.

Merrifield led Picayune with 119 yards on 7 rushes. Senior Trey Winbrow  added 6 runs for 68

yards and Baker had 59 yards on 14 carries.

Picayune (5-3, 4-0) will be at home on Friday when the Long Beach Bearcats come calling for

a 7:00pm kick off on Riser Medical Associates Field at Tide Stadium.
