Maroon Tide tops Harrison Central 49-30

Picayune--Picayune got its first win of the season with a 49-30 win over the Harrison
Central (HCHS) Red Rebels at Riser Medical Associates Field at Tide Stadium.
After an exchange of punts, Picayune created the first break of the game when Kevin
Reed intercepted a Red Rebel pass at the HCHS 45 and returned it to the HCHS 22.
Six plays later Skylar Bowman plunged in from 1 yard out and Jackson Samples kicked
the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 2:50 to play in the first quarter.
Picayune's defense forced a punt on HCHS' next possession and the Maroon Tide set
up shop at their own 20. After earning a first down on the second play of the possession,
Josh 'Little Train' Littles broke loose on a 70 yard touchdown run with 10:41 left in the half.
Samples converted the point after for a 14-0 lead.
The Red Rebels got on the board when Malik Blackston returned the ensuing kickoff 95
yards for a touchdown to make it 14-6 with 10:24 left. The point after was wide left.
Picayune countered after the HCHS kickoff with a methodical 13 play 73 yard drive using
5 minutes and 57 seconds with V.J. Holt bolting in from 2 yards out wtih 4:19 left in the half.
Samples' point after made it 21-6.
The Maroon Tide forced another Red Rebel punt on HCHS' next possession and Picayune
took over at their 49. On third down, Bowman found Reed on a slant route and Reed raced
by the Red Rebel secondary for the 45 yard touchdown with 1:32 left in the half. Samples
once again true on the point after for a 28-6 lead.
Reed gave the Maroon Tide another boost by returning the second half kickoff from his
15 to the Red Rebel 5 yard line. Four plays later, Bowman scored on a 1 yard sneak and
Samples extra point made it 35-6 with 9:55 left in the third quarter.
Picayune's other scores were a 1 yard run by Littles with 11:15 left in the game and another
one touchdown on a 58 yard sprint with 6:57 left.
HCHS got scores from Nehemiah Thompson on a 77 yard kickoff return after Littles' had
scored from 1 yard out. Walter Carter scored from 1 yard out with 7:54 left. HCHS did
not convert any of its two-point conversion attempts that were attempted on all of their scores
after the first extra point was wide left.
Littles led Picayune with 241 yards on 27 rushes. Earl Nastasi, back from the injured list, had
a solid game blocking for Littles and he added 58 yards on 9 carries. V.J. Holt had 5 runs for
Picayune will travel to Gautier on Friday to open up Region play with a 7:00pm kickoff.
