Picayune topples PRC 45-10

Picayune--Picayune dominated the first half building a 35-0 lead on its way to a convincing 45-10 win over Pearl

River Central to capture the Class 5A South State Championship before an overflow crowd of over 6,500 at

Picayune Memorial Stadium.

During pre-game activities, Picayune's 1986 state championship team was recognized on the 25th anniversary of

their championship.  The current Maroon Tide team followed that celebration with a fast start that quickly turned

the game into a rout.

The Maroon Tide went to work on the first possession of the game by driving 80 yards in 9 plays with sophomore

Preston Dedeaux bulling his way in from 3 yards out with 8:09 left.   Dalton O'Meara punched through the extra

point for a 7-0 lead.

Picayune's defense forced a three and out on PRC's first possession and got the ball back at the Maroon

Tide 13 after the PRC punt.

The Maroon Tide converted two first downs behind the running of senior Dereonte Magee and Dedeaux

moving the ball to the PRC 45.  On the next play, junior Desmond Taylor busted up the middle, bounced

outside to the right sideline and out ran the Blue Devil secondary for the touchdown.  O'Meara's point after

made it 14-0 with 3:19 left.

After the ensuing kickoff, PRC converted a first down before punting the ball back to the Maroon Tide and with

the touchback, Picayune started at their 20.

Picayune continued to pound away on the ground running 12 plays with Magee slashing in from 9 yards out with

6:54 left in the second quarter.  O'Meara was true again on the point after for a 21-0 lead.

Picayune's next two scores came very quickly and both involved senior Justin Mark.

First, Mark blocked the PRC punt at the Blue Devil 18 and scooped it up at the 8 and raced in for the touchdown.

O'Meara kicked the extra point to make it 28-0 with 4:23 left.

On the ensuing kick off, Picayune forced a fumble and Nick Marble pounced on it at the 43.  One play later, junior

quarterback Ben Hickman lofted a perfect pass to Mark who caught the ball at the 10 and high-stepped in for the

touchdown with 4:04 left.  O'Meara tapped through the extra point for a 35-0 halftime lead.

PRC fumbled the second half kickoff and Picayune's Jaylin Dees recovered at the Blue Devil 28.  Magee scored

four plays later on a 1 yard run and O'Meara's point after made it 42-0 with 10:30 left in the third. 

PRC got on the scoreboard on their next possession on a 44 yard field goal by Devon Detto with 7:19 left in the

third quarter. 

Picayune responded by moving from their 12 to the Blue Devil 13 settling for a 30 yard field goal by O'Meara with

2:19 left in the quarter to make it 45-3.

PRC scored on a 3 yard touchdown run by Trey Wynn with 9:33 left in the game.

Picayune rushed for for 341 yards.  Magee finished with 140 yards on 17 carries.  Dedeaux had 8 rushes for

49 yards and Taylor had 58 on 3 carries.   Sophomore DeAndre Anderson came on in relief of Magee and

Dedeaux in second half running for 58 yards on 11 carries.  Sophomore Samuel Hickman entered the game with

Anderson and ran for 69 yards on 6 rushes.

Picayune (12-2) will face Starkville on Saturday at 7:00pm in Jackson's Mississippi Memorial Stadium for the

Class 5A championship.
