by Carey Meitzler
Long Beach--Picayune senior running back Dereonte Magee ran for 239 yards in propelling the Maroon Tide to a 38-28 win
over Long Beach that clinched the Region 4-5A title before an estimated 3,000 at Lumpkin-Magee Stadium.
Picayune wasted very little time in putting points on the scoreboard. Starting at their own 34 yard line after the opening kickoff,
Picayune put the ball in the hands of Magee who ran for 6, 32, and 7 yards to put the ball at the Long Beach 21. On first down,
Daveon Greene scored on a reverse racing down the left sideline for the score with 10:32 left in the quarter. Dalton O'Meara
punched through the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

third down pass from Thad Miller to Patric Devlin that setup a first and goal at the 5 yard line. Picayune would hold the Bearcats
on fourth down when Richie Brown, running at quarterback in the shotgun, was tackled just short of the goal line by Picayune's
Nolan Fletcher and Cody Smith.
Picayune didn't keep the ball long, as they fumbled just four plays later at their 13 and Long Beach recovered. After no gain on a
first down run, Picayune defensive tackle Chad Mitchell recorded a sack on Miller that pushed the ball back to the 25 yard line.
Long Beach turned the ball over on downs with two consecutive incomplete passes with the clock showing 3:07 left.
The Maroon Tide methodically marched the 75 yards in 16 plays holding the ball for 7 minutes and 59 seconds with Magee
scooting in from 15 yards out on a toss sweep to his right with 7:17 left in the second quarter. A bad snap foiled the point
after attempt and Picayune led 13-0.
Long Beach took over at their 28 and moved the ball to the Picayune 42, but had to punt the ball back to the Maroon Tide.
Starting at their on 10, Picayune's offensive line exerted their dominance once again as the Maroon Tide would go the 90 yards
in 9 plays with sophomore Preston Dedeaux bulling his way in for the touchdown from 5 yards out with 1:11 left. O'Meara's
point after made it 20-0.
The Bearcats move the ball down the field in the waning moments of the half, but Mitchell struck again recording his 7th sack
of the season as he and defensive end Doug Cross dropped Miller at the Maroon Tide 31 as time expired.
Long Beach got their first points when Brown returned the second half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Ryan Maniccia kicked
the extra point making it 20-7 with 11:47 left in the third quarter.
Picayune answered just two snaps later on a masterful 66 yard run by Magee. Magee weaved his way through the Bearcats
with two cutbacks before he reached the 50 and needed a third change of direction at the Bearcat 20 on his way to the end zone.
The extra point was blocked and Picayune lead 26-7 with 11:03 left in the quarter.
Long Beach score on their possession on a 69 yard catch and run from Miller to Cook with 10:28 left. Maniccia kicked the
point after cutting the lead to 26-14.
Picayune took over at their 35 yard line after the ensuing kickoff . The Maroon Tide converted two first downs and facing 4th
and 8 yards to go at the Long Beach 41, junior quarterback Ben Hickman connected on a pass with Magee down the left sideline
at the 25 and he raced past the Bearcat secondary for the touchdown with 4:37 left in the third quarter. The drive was 10 plays
and took 4 minutes and 37 seconds off the clock. Picayune's two point attempt was unsuccessful and they led 32-14 with 4:51
on the third quarter clock.
After the Maroon Tide defense forced a three and out series, the offense started at the Bearcat 32 after a very short Long Beach
punt. Picayune would run 8 plays to cover the 68 yards with junior fullback Desmond Taylor plunging in from 1 yard run on the
first play of the fourth quarter. The point after was wide right and Picayune led 38-14 with 11:58 left.
Long Beach added two scores in the fourth quarter. The first was a 20 yard pass from Miller to Brown with 8:25 left. The other
