Picayune storms by Gautier 38-31

by Carey Meitzler

Gautier-In the span of 4 minutes and 24 seconds, the Picayune Maroon Tide scored 22 points to take a 38-31 win over the

Gautier Gators in a frenzy that resembled a Wall Street sell off.  Veteran Maroon Tide head coach Dodd Lee stated, "This may

be the worst game we have ever played and won."

Picayune kicked off to open the game and forced Gautier to punt the ball back to the Maroon Tide. Taking over at their own 28,

Picayune wasted little time giving the ball back when a fumble after a pass reception was recovered by the Gators at the Maroon

Tide 43. Gautier squandered the opportunity by missing a 34 yard field goal.

On the first play after the missed field goal, Picayune laid the ball on the grass surface again fumbling at their own 23. Gautier

capitalized this time scoring a touchdown 6 plays later on a 1 yard run by P.J. Bush with 3:05 left in the first quarter. Picayune's

James Tatum blocked the point.

The Maroon Tide responded quickly after the ensuing kickoff as they covered 67 yards in 5 plays with sophomore Preston

Dedeaux scoring on a nifty run around right end from 17 yards out. Dedeaux had gained 27 yards on the play previous to his

touchdown. Dalton O'Meara's point after put the Maroon Tide up 7-6 with 1:31 left in the quarter.

Picayune extended the lead to 9-6 on a safety on the next possession for Gautier. On fourth down, the long snap sailed over

the punter's head and he was called for intentional grounding as he chased down the ball in the end zone and attempted a pass.

After the free kick, the Maroon Tide punted the ball back to the Gators. On first down at their 23, Gautier's Eric Maye broke

free on a 76 yard sprint to the Tide 11 where defensive back Ken Breland made a touchdown saving tackle. The Tide defense

turned away the Gators when a fourth and goal pass into the end zone fell incomplete.

Picayune's next two possessions ended on a fumble and an interception, but Gautier was unable to convert any points and the

Maroon Tide led 9-6 at the half.

The Maroon Tide received the second half kickoff and had to punt the ball to the Gators . Gauiter was little time when

quarterback Xavien Johnson raced 42 yards to the Picayune 15 and then P.J. Bush ran it in for a touchdown on the next play

with 9:58 left in the quarter. Leading 12-9, the Gators decided to opt for a two point conversion that failed.

Picayune regained the lead when Dereonte Magee raced 54 yards for a touchdown on the first play after the kickoff. O'Meara

kicked the point after to put the Maroon Tide up 16-12 with 9:40 left in the quarter.

Gautier came back with a 7 play 65 yard drive that produced a 44 yard touchdown run by quarterback Xavien Johnson

with 5:09 left in the quarter. The point after was blocked and the score remained 18-16.

Picayune coughed up the ball on their next possession and Gautier took over at their 29 yard line with 2:26 left in the quarter.

The Gators move the ball to the Picayune 17 yard as the game moved into the fourth quarter. Gautier lined up for an apparent

field goal attempt, however, the Gators snapped the ball to Eric Maye who was lined up as a deep blocker and Maye raced

around right end for the touchdown with 10:33 left in the game. The extra point was blocked again and Gautier led 25-16.

After the kickoff, Picayune started at their own 37. Picayune ran 13 plays and moved the ball to the Gautier 4 yard line,

but fumbled the ball again and James Richards scooped up the ball on a bounced and raced 92 yards for a touchdown giving

the Gators a 31-16 lead with 6:01 left.

Magee raced down the right sideline with the ensuing kickoff and was finally tackled at the Gautier 37. On the next play, junior

quarterback found junior tight end Tanner Bryan at the 20 and Bryan hauled in the pass and lumbered down the sideline for the

touchdown with 5:46 left. O'Meara's point after made it 31-23.

The Maroon Tide forced Gautier to punt the ball on their next possession and Magee grabbed the ball at his own 35 and

motored all the way to the Gator 4 yard line. Dedeaux scored on the next play with 3:46 left and then ran it in for the two

point conversion to tie the game at 31-31.

Gautier was unable to move the football after the kickoff and went into punt formation. Once again, the snapped sailed over

the punter's head and after a mad scramble, Picayune got the ball at the Gator 5 yard line. Magee punched it in with 1:37 left

and O'Meara's extra point made it 38-31.

Gautier's last gasp ended when senior linebacker Troy Egana dropped back in pass coverage on a fourth and 13 yards to go

and deflected a Johnson pass into the air that was intercepted by Dedeaux to seal the victory.

Magee tallied 152 yards on 18 carries to pace the Maroon Tide. Dedeaux had 13 rushes for 95 yards.

Picayune (5-1, 2-0) will host Pascagoula next Friday for a 7:00pm kickoff.
