Picayune Sinks the Gulfport Admirals 45-6

by Carey Meitzler

Gulfport was hoping to drop the Picayune Maroon Tide from the ranks of the unbeaten in the Admirals home opener at newly

renovated Milner Stadium, but the Maroon Tide had other ideas as they sank the hopes of the home crowd with a resounding

45-6 victory.

Picayune got off to a fast start when junior Drew Cole took the opening kick off and raced right up the center of the

field  to the Tide 37 yard line.  With the offensive line of tackles James Brady and Jonathan Billups, guards Huey Stockstill

and Thor Newbold, center Tommy Dillard, and tight end Justin Flowers pushing back the Admirals, junior tailback

Albert Richard and senior fullback Dale Meitzler moved the ball down to the Gulfport 11 yard line in 5 plays.  Richard

had runs of 2, 20, and 6 yards while Meitzler ran for 5 and 19 setting the table for sophomore wingback Reginald Bailey's

11 run into the right corner of the end zone with 9:09 left in the quarter. Irving Gonzalez booted the PAT and Picayune

led 7-0.

Neither team was able to generate any substantial threat midway through the second quarter.  Picayune was unable to convert a

first down at their own 46 yard line and the Admirals took over on downs. But, Gulfport could only produce one first down and

had to settle for a 50 yard field goal attempt from Cory Carlson.  Carlson kicked was no good as it bounced off the crossbar.

Picayune was unable to move the football and forced to punt it away.  However, Gulfport's Cedric Percy was jarred from the

ball by Picayune's Dale Meitzler and Thor Newbold pounced on it at the Admiral 45 giving the Tide new life with 2:48 left.

Picayune moved down to the 8 yard line and Irving Gonzalez kicked a 22 yard field goal on the last play of the half for a 10-0

advantage at half time.

The Maroon Tide wasted little time in asserting themselves in the second half.  After forcing the Admirals to punt the ball, Picayune

marched 68 yards in 9 plays.  Cole ran the first four plays for 14, 4, 10, and 10 yards before giving way to Richard who punched

it in from 2 yards out with 5:55 left in the third quarter.  Gonzalez's PAT made it 17-0.

On Gulfport's next possesion, Picayune's Chance Griffith got his third interception of the year at the Picayune 32 yard line and

returned it to the 50 yard line.  On first down, senior quarterback Micah Hickman passed for 15 yards to one of his brothers,

junior Caleb Hickman, putting the ball at Gulfport's 35 yard line.  Albert Richard ran for 9 yards and then sprinted in from 26 yards

for the touchdown with 2:44 left.  The PAT by Gonzalez made it 24-0.

The next time Picayune got the ball, Richard raced 63 yards for a score to make it 31-0.  On Gulfport's next possession, T'Daryll

Greys picked off a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown and a 38-0 lead after Gonzalez kicked the extra point.

Gulfport scored with 2:26 when Herman Matson picked up a Picayune fumble and raced 20 yards for a touchdown.

Reginald Bailey blocked the extra point and score was 38-6.

Greys closed out the scoring with :07 left in the game with a 42 yard sprint around left end.

The Maroon Tide had 390 yards rushing on 44 attempts.  Richard finished with 231 yards on 26 carries and 3 TDs.

Meitzler had 4 rushes for 33 yards.  Cole tallied 39 yards on 5 carries. Courtney McDougle had 2 attempts for 31 yards.

Micah Hickman was 5 of 10 passing for 46 yards including two passes of 12 yards to senior Justin Griffith.

Picayune (3-0) will open district play at St Stanislaus next week.
