Maroon Tide sinks Pass Christian 56-28

The division 8-4A football game pitting Picayune against Pass Christian appeared to be imitating an Arena football contest as

both teams scored on their first possession of the game in a total of five plays.  But, Picayune turned up their game a notch and

doubled up the Pirates on their way to a 56-28 victory at Pass Christian.

Albert Richard, who scored four touchdowns on the night, scored from 47 yards out on the third play of the game.  Irving

Gonzalez booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 10:24 on the first quarter clock.

Pass Christian answered scoring on their second play after the kickoff on a 49 yard run by Shane Bowser.  The PAT was good

from Jonathan Willis tieing the score at 7-7 with 9:50 left.

Picayune answered on their next series of plays going 80 yards on 8 plays with the touchdown coming on a 30 yard run by senior

fullback Dale Meitzler.  Gonzalez's PAT made it 14-7 with 6:00 left in the first quarter.

On the Pirates next possesion, Courtney McDougle and Levi Slaydon knocked the ball loose from the Pirates and T'Darryl fell

on the fumble at the Pass 30 yard line.  Richard scored three plays later on a 15 yard run and Gonzalez kicked the extra point

for a 21-7 lead with 1:23 left in the first quarter.

After the Maroon Tide held the Pirates and forced a punt, Picayune called Richard's number again and he delivered with a

40 yard touchdown run with 10:35 left  in the second quarter.

Drew Cole intercepted a pass at the Picayune 24 yard line on the next possesion and the Tide marched down the field in 9 plays

and Cole's 2 yard plunge into the endzone put the score at 35-7 with 4:30 on the second quarter clock.

The Pirates responded with a 61 yard pass from Chad Moore to Aaron Saucier to make it 35-14 with 3:20 left before the half.

Picayune's next possession ended at Pass Christian 45 yard line when the Tide turned the ball over on downs.

Moore then passed to Jonathan Willis for a 53 yard touchdown bringing Pass Christian closer at 35-21 at the half.

On the first possession of the third quarter, Picayune held the Pirates and forced a punt.  Picayune took over at the Pirate 43.

Albert Richard ran the ball on three consecutive plays with runs of 33, 5, and 5, the later a touchdown run.  With Gonzalez

point after splitting the uprights, Picayune led 42-21 with 8:12 left in the third quarter.

Picayune forced another punt and got the ball back at their own 48 yard line.  On the seven play of the drive, Meitzler scored

from five yards and Gonzalez kicked the extra point for a 49-21 lead.

Picayune's senior cornerback Justin Griffith intercepted a pass on the next Pirate possession and Picayune set up shop at the

Pirate 37 on the last play of the third quarter. Picayune scored on 37 yard pass from senior quarterback Micah Hickman to

Meitzler on the first play of the fourth quarter.  The Gonzalez PAT made it 56-21 with 11:06 left in the game.

Pass Christian scored on a 3 yard run by Willis with 6:15 left in the game to make the final score 56-28.

Richard, who had 12 touchdowns coming into the game, rushed for 191 yards on 14 carries.  Drew Cole had 144 yards on

15 carries.  Meitzler finished with 6 rushes for 94 yards.

Picayune (6-0, 3-0) will host Long Beach in a key division 8-4A game next week while Pass Christian (1-5, 0-2) will be at

home against Bay High.
